Advertising

Local unions may find it advantageous to take a particular message to a broader public. This might be done in conjunction with a lobbying effort, organizing campaign, contract negotiations or as a response to a negative news story or anti-union publicity. Often, joint labor-management committees have a budget for advertising in order to promote a positive image of union construction. Advertising may include, billboards, radio or television commercials, brochures, bumper stickers or other promotional merchandise. Unions often participate in job fairs or career days to encourage younger workers or students to apply to apprenticeship programs. Decide in advance who the target audience is for your message. Develop a budget and solicit proposals from several firms who are experienced in public relations. Advertising can be expensive but unions generally need all the help they can get presenting a positive image to the public.
