Maintaining Accurate Financial Records Advertising claims touting the paperless office may be exaggerated but computers are a necessity even in the smallest local union. Besides processing a substantial amount of paperwork, most union offices generate a variety of electronic records. Familiarity with common software is a useful skill for union leaders. The best advice is straightforward: Follow good bookkeeping practices. Computer software is available to simplify the process but it may be wise to hire an accountant to set up your bookkeeping system. A complete overhaul is unwarranted, however, unless there are serious problems with procedures currently in place. All disbursements of union funds should strictly adhere to constitution and bylaws requirements. Any questions about specific procedures the union is required to follow should go to the International Secretary/Treasurer. Click
