STRATEGIC PLANNING

Strategic Planning is a 5-stage process to help an organization get from where it currently is to where it wants to go that involves:

    1.  Defining a mission that encompasses the organization's essential purpose and its ultimate goals;

    2.  Analyzing the balance of forces the union must    contend with in pursuing its mission;

    3.  Identifying short-term and long-term goals that are critical to the union's success and that operationalize its mission;

    4.  Developing an action plan that sets clear goals and timetables, prioritizes objectives, and allows for specific task assignment and accountability; and,

    5.  Monitoring, evaluating, and modifying the action plan to deal with problems, changes in circumstances, and new opportunities.
